Background Noise has always been a problem for people who use hearing instruments. In addition to amplifying speech, hearing instruments also amplify other sounds which interfere with speech understanding. Research continues in digital signal processing and the applications of directional microphones, but presently, the best method of coping with background noise is through the use of assistive listening devices (ALDs). 

ALDs are usually used in conjunction with hearing instruments to help overcome the obstacles posed by noise and distance by delivering speech information directly to the listener's hearing instruments. Transmitters send speech signals by way of FM radio waves, infrared light or electromagnetic induction. The signal is picked-up by a receiver and delivered directly to the hearing instruments.

One reason ALDs have not been used to their full potential outside of educational environments is that they have been cumbersome and noticeable, consisting of cords, neck-loops or other body-worn devices. The bother and self-conscious feelings that were part of using ALDs outweighed the benefits of improved communication in the minds of many ALD candidates.

Fortunately, developments in electronics have led to the miniaturization of ALDs, and in some cases, the elimination of cords.
